Getting Started

What myofunctional therapy is, and whether it’s right for you or your child.

It’s a structured program of exercises that retrains the muscles of the tongue, lips, and face to support proper breathing, swallowing, and rest posture — addressing the root cause of many oral habits and airway concerns, rather than just the symptoms.

Common signs include mouth breathing, snoring, tongue-tie, prolonged thumb or finger sucking, speech articulation issues, or orthodontic relapse. A free screening helps us assess oral rest posture, breathing, and swallow patterns to confirm whether therapy is a good fit.

We work with children as young as 4 (once they can participate in guided exercises) through adults of any age. Programs are tailored to the patient’s developmental stage and goals.

No referral is required to schedule a free screening, though many clients come to us after a recommendation from a dentist, orthodontist, ENT, or speech-language pathologist. We’re happy to coordinate with any existing providers.

Your first visit is a comprehensive orofacial assessment — we evaluate oral rest posture, breathing, swallowing, and muscle function, collect and record measurements and photographs, then walk you through whether therapy is recommended and what a personalized plan would look like. This initial evaluation is a two-hour time investment.

Pricing and Insurance

Cost, payment, and insurance basics.

At this time, most insurance plans do not currently cover myofunctional therapy, although coverage varies by individual plan. Wellness Myo is a private pay practice, so payment is made directly by the patient.

Our comprehensive myofunctional therapy program starts at $2400 and varies based on individual needs, treatment goals, and therapy duration. Most patients complete therapy within approximately 6-8 months. The program investment includes individualized therapy sessions, pre- and post-frenectomy check-ins if indicated, a personalized home exercise program, and ongoing guidance, coaching, and support throughout treatment. Because every patient presents with different needs and goals, the exact treatment plan and total investment will be discussed following your initial evaluation.

The initial comprehensive consultation is a separate $175 investment and is paid at the time of the consultation, before beginning therapy. During this appointment, we will assess your oral and myofunctional patterns, discuss your concerns and goals, record raw data and photographs, discuss additional recommendations, and determine whether myofunctional therapy is appropriate for you.

Yes, payment plans are available for full programs. We partner with Stripe to offer Klarna and AfterPay, as well as an in-house 4-month payment plan option or a pay-in-full option.

Yes — the initial 15-minute guidance phone call is complimentary and comes with no obligation to continue with a full program.

Treatment Process

What to expect once you begin a program.

Treatment typically spans 6-8 months, with one-hour therapy sessions scheduled every other week. Treatment timelines vary based on age, specific needs, goals, and progress.

Sessions include guided tongue, lip, and facial muscle exercises, as well as breathing and swallowing retraining. Most of the work happens at home through short (5–10 minute) daily practice between sessions.

Yes — consistent daily practice is what builds new, habituated neuromuscular patterns. We provide clear instructions and track progress together at each visit. Self-reflection is encouraged to help guide individual progress and needs.

Yes. We regularly coordinate with dentists, orthodontists, ENT, chiropractors, craniosacral therapists, speech-language pathology providers, and other healthcare providers throughout the Austin area as part of a collaborative care team.

Therapy is structured in progressive phases, allowing you to build foundational skills and strengthen before advancing to more complex exercises and functional patterns. Progress is measured by improvements in breathing, resting posture, swallowing, oral habits, and muscle coordination. At the end of therapy, we have a final skills test to ensure that new habits have become automatic, and prescribe a maintenance plan to help ensure lasting results.

Conditions We Treat

The habits and patterns myofunctional therapy most commonly addresses.

Yes. We provide both pre-release preparatory exercises and post-release rehabilitation to help restore full tongue mobility and function around a frenectomy procedure, in coordination with your frenectomy provider. If you need provider recommendations, we can assist you.

In many cases, yes. We use targeted exercises to restore nasal breathing patterns, which can support better craniofacial development, sleep quality, and daytime energy over time.

Myofunctional exercises have been shown to improve airway muscle tone and can be a valuable complement to medical sleep care. We work alongside your physician or sleep specialist rather than replacing medical treatment.

Yes — we use gentle, positive-reinforcement programs designed to support habit elimination and help prevent dental malocclusions that can result from prolonged non-nutritive sucking habits.

We offer exercises to ease jaw clenching, facial tension, and muscle imbalances that contribute to TMJ discomfort, often as part of a broader care plan with your dentist.
